This App Nets $276K a Year Across 3,000 Subscribers and Ends Manual Travel Logs

A US tax technology provider serving 3,000 subscribers across all 50 states needed a way for frequent interstate travelers to prove where they had been. We built an app combining autonomous GPS tracking with every state's residency rules. Manual travel logs are gone, and the app nets about $276K a year in recurring revenue across 3,000 subscribers.

The Challenge

People who travel often between states had no simple way to log trips or to know when they had crossed a threshold that triggers new state tax obligations. State authorities use predictive modeling to target residency audits, and manual logs do not withstand that scrutiny. The rules differ across all 50 states. A single failed audit for someone with $5M in income can mean $500K to $1.5M in additional state tax, plus penalties of 75 to 200% of unpaid tax in some jurisdictions. Building a defensible report from memory or manual logs took days of work, every time it was needed.

What We Did

We started with tracking that asks nothing of the user. GPS-based travel logging with privacy controls runs in the background, requiring no manual input, and we mapped it against all 50 US states' residency rules so the app knows what each trip means. We then added alerts that warn users before they trigger a state's residency tax obligation, evidence storage for receipts and bookings, and ready-to-submit report generation. The record is built as the travel happens, not reconstructed months later from memory.

The Solution

A consumer app now tracks interstate travel automatically, with privacy controls and no manual input. It alerts users before they cross a state's residency threshold, stores receipts and bookings as evidence, and generates a ready-to-file, audit-defensible tax report in minutes.

The Outcome

Across 3,000 subscribers the app nets about $276,000 a year in recurring revenue. Every subscriber beyond that adds return at near-zero additional cost. The shift is for the traveler. Days of reconstructing a travel log became minutes, and each subscriber gets a defensible answer to a five- and six-figure compliance risk instead of hoping a manual log holds up in an audit.
