Targeting the Right Nurses Is Worth Up to $2.5M a Year

A nationwide pharmacy network of 18,000-plus nurses across 450 organizations had low adoption of a new mobile ordering app, and reports too broad to show who was not using it. We built nurse-level adoption dashboards. Broad training became targeted outreach, and a 1% shift of orders is worth $1.4M to $2.5M a year.

The Challenge

A new mobile ordering app for 18,000-plus nurses across 450 organizations had low adoption, and existing reports were too broad to pinpoint who was not using it or why. Without that detail, the network could not direct training to the people who needed it, so phone and fax ordering continued at scale. Every order placed by phone or fax instead of the app cost several times more to process, across a network serving 97,000-plus patients a day. Training was spread across the whole population instead of the specific non-adopters who needed it, so the money went to people who were already using the app.

What We Did

We started with utilization. We built dashboards tracking manual versus electronic ordering across the network, so the picture of where phone and fax ordering was still happening came from the data rather than from assumptions about which organizations were behind. We then took adoption tracking down to the individual nurse, and added week, month and quarter views to guide ongoing training. The network can now name the non-adopters, see whether outreach moved them, and adjust, instead of running another broad campaign.

The Solution

Dashboards now track manual versus electronic ordering down to the individual nurse, across 18,000-plus nurses in 450 organizations, with week, month and quarter views. Training goes to identified non-adopters instead of the full population.

The Outcome

At $4 to $7 saved per order shifted, a 1% move from phone and fax to the app is worth $1.4M to $2.5M a year. Every percentage point beyond that compounds, across a network serving 97,000-plus patients a day. The change is where training goes. Instead of campaigns aimed at 18,000 nurses, the network works with the specific people still ordering by phone and fax, and can see week by week whether that outreach is working.
